Inwards, onwards & upwards
A journal of invitations, ideas & inspiration to keep you moving from where you are to where you want to be
Two heads are better than one
This month, I am training a new cohort of aspiring Artistic Directors and launching a new Coaching Group for aspiring Executive Directors.
Against the backdrop of a new Prime Minister, I have therefore found myself thinking a great deal about leadership.
How to get a Michelin Star
There’s a scene in FX’s brilliant series The Bear on Disney+ where someone turns to Jeremy Allen Whites character and says:
‘You want a star?
You’re going to have to care about everything more than anything.’
And it accidentally encapsulates exactly what it is like to lead.
It’s easy to be in charge; it’s hard to take responsibility
A lot of us who aspired to leadership grew up believing it’s about being in charge.
But just as it is easier to be told what to do than to be empowered to find a solution ourselves
So it is harder to take responsibility than be in charge.
To truly prepare for leadership in the cultural sector, there's one crucial shift you must make.
If you're gearing up for leadership, it's likely because you excel in your current role.
You've mastered your craft and gained valuable management experience along the way. But these roles focus you on execution.
And the essence of leadership lies not in doing.
We need to reframe what we think about when we think about leading.
So often we default to negative pre-conceptions about being in charge.
That it is hard.
That it is all-consuming.
That is is ever-changing.
That we are, in fact, ever really in charge at all.
