Inwards, onwards & upwards
A journal of invitations, ideas & inspiration to keep you moving from where you are to where you want to be
Fall back in love with amateurism.
Don’t get me wrong; turning pro is great.
Being paid to do what you love is a privilege. The pursuit of excellence in your chosen field is meaningful. There’s deep pleasure (as well as great pain) in striving for mastery.
After all, if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it to the best of your ability.
And if your ability to do something is significant enough that other people will fund or pay you to do it, then congratulations; you’ve just turned pro.
But that’s a strange moment.
Begin with the end in mind.
So that was January.
The month to start new things, try again, make a change, get stuff done. Or maybe a moment to lay low and practice the art of ‘wintering’; resting, rejuvenating, renewing - or retreating in difficult times.
You can do anything, but not everything
You can do anything but not everything.
If you could do everything you’d never have to choose.
You could do it all.
Or none of it.
But what would be the point? Without choice there is no meaning.
And where would the fun be in that?
Luckily for you, time is finite. So you might as well face your finitude.
Don’t get it right; get it written.
Getting it right is perfectionism.
Procrastination.
Self-judgement.
Fear of failure.
Getting it written is graft.
Showing up.
Self-expression.
Courage to try.
Your only duty is to turn up at the page.
The best away-days transform your year.
If a great meeting leaves you feeling clearer, more motivated and better connected, a brilliant away-day crystallises vision, deepens passion and grows loyalty.
The best away-days supercharge your collective endeavour.
New Year’s Resolutions work. If they work for you.
New year’s resolutions work.
Only if they work for you.
Where you’re at.
Right now.
Some years private goal-setting, public declarations of ambitious intent or personal positive affirmations feel right.
But there are other ways to capitalise on the motivation a fresh year can bring than the trusty resolution.
